Home About Kenyon Kenyon Lewis |
About KenyonKenyon Lewis received his BFA from the University of Oregon in 1982 with a focus in ceramic design and minor in geology and continued his education as an artist in residence at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Co. He has been involved in many public art projects and worked for many years in the custom tile industry. Two recently completed sites were commissioned for the public library in Davis, CA. His obsession with clay comes from the versatile quality of the medium, durability and compatibility with architecture. The inspiration for the surfaces he uses comes from the forces that shape our physical landscape. These cast textures formed by wind or water are patterns found only in the landscape in places like rivers, beaches and deserts. The shower tiles shown that he made and installed are relief formations from a wind swept beach and all of the forty 15" tiles come from a separate mold. Other surfaces are created in a controlled studio environment using a variety of modeling techniques. Mr. Lewis is a skilled moldmaker and specializes in large tiles with low relief. More conventional sizes are always possible when appropriate and his projects are custom and site specific. These familiar organic textures offer a strong contrast to the often inorganic lines of architecture. |
